DESCRIPTION OF ELDERS & DEACONS

ELDERS

Elders, or “overseers”, are men who guard, watch over, and feed the “flock”, which is the church (Acts 20:28-31). This involves ensuring that the truth  is being taught and that each person is growing spiritually. They also oversee the work of the local congregation, such as benevolence (Acts 11:29-30).

Qualifications for this office are found in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9.

DEACONS

Deacons, from the Greek word for “servents”, are men chosen to do work for the church that may not necessarily deal with preaching or teaching. Examples of such duties include food distribution, building maintenance, program leadership, etc. Deacons and their duties are described in Acts 6:1-7 (seven chosen to serve).
Qualifications for this office are found in 1 Timothy 3:8-13.
